What is Mold?

Mold, or mould, is a structure found on certain types of fungi that contains spores. These spores can vary in colour, size, and shape. When disturbed, these dust-like particles get released into the air and can easily be inhaled. You may or may not even realize you have breathed in a substantial amount of mould spores, but it can damage your health. Black mold is especially harmful to your health, but all types carry some level of risk.

How is mold harmful?

Mold comprises tiny spores that can be breathed in, causing damage to the respiratory system. For those with asthma or COPD, the consequences can be more severe than merely exhibiting allergy-like symptoms. Excessive mold presence can trigger reactions, even though there is a low level of mold naturally present in our surroundings. Certain types of mold contain mycotoxins that could be particularly hazardous to some people. Symptoms of mold exposure include itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing, skin irritation, and sore throat.

Mold – Where is it found?

Mould can be found anywhere in the home. Here are some common culprits where you may find a mold outbreak:

What to expect

Professional Mold Removal Services

Our process for removing mold uses a similar approach as our other services involving a Notice of Project to WorkSafe BC, containment, and removal.

NOP (Notice of Project)

The process of mold remediation begins with our company contacting WorkSafe BC with a Notice of Project (NOP). This is standard procedure for professionally removing harmful substances from a building. The NOP gives WorkSafe BC 48 hours notice of the project, so they can drop in unannounced to inspect the removal process. This ensures the removal is done safely, properly, and consistently between projects. The client will be given a copy of the NOP upon completion of the job.

Mold Containment

Due to the nature of mold spores, enclosing the area is often necessary. This containment ensures the airborne spores do not breach the worksite, allowing workers to thoroughly remove the mold. Depending on where the mold abatement is occurring, some areas of the home may become inaccessible for the duration of the project. The containment may block hallways, doorways, and access to other rooms. Removing mold may mean that alternative accommodations need to be arranged ahead of time, especially if it is a large project or the home’s only bathroom is being worked on, for example.

Air Monitoring
and HEPA Air Scrubbers

The type of material we are disturbing, its friability, and size of the project will determine the level of controls used to complete the remediation. Some projects may require 3rd party air monitoring and HEPA air scrubbers. These machines may need to run 24/7 until the project is complete and air quality in the workspace is deemed safe.

Clearance Letter

Once the mold abatement has been completed, Harbour Hazmat will provide a Clearance Letter along with the NOP. This letter states what work has been done, how the mold and other contaminated materials were removed and disposed of and confirms the site is now safe for unprotected workers. Usually contractors request this letter so they know their workers will be safe. Some permits also require this type of document.

How much does it cost to remove mold?

Mold removal or abatement costs vary depending on the size of the project. A small space will take less time than clearing out an entire house. Stay safe and contact Harbour Hazmat for a free consultation on your mold abatement project.
